Mljet Destination Guide

/ Thursday, February 2, 2012 /

Mljet has very few residents, no large towns and only one major road.
The waters are rich with marine life and Mljet also produces its own wine, olives and goat's cheese. The highlight and most unusual feature of Mljet is the two inland salt water lakes - Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero - connected to the sea by a narrow canal. In the middle of Veliko Jezero is the tiny islet of Sv Marija which contains a former Benedictine monastery dating from the 12th century and this can be accessed by regularly scheduled small boats.
Things to See & Do
• Hire a bike and explore the trails around the lakes
• Hire a canoe and check out the shoreline up close
• Take in the beauty of the National Park with a stroll around the lakes
• Swim in the Small Lake
• Take a boat across the lake to the monastery on the islet of Sv Marija
